As a Swiss national and resident who has worked in the UK for a number of years, I was interested to maximize the value of my UK pension fund. This led me to evaluate the option of doing a Cash Equivalent Transfer and to invest it in a privately managed pension fund.

When life’s twists and turns left me with a door firmly shut behind me and several opening in front, it was confusing to know what to do next. At 55 and with 37 years of youth and community work behind me there were many options. As opposed to facing a brick wall, I was facing a maze of opportunity. It was at this point I met Chris Hall from Harrison Brook. What a great decision that turned out to be. I had small pots of savings and old work pensions scattered here and there with a main pension to come when I reach 67. Chris helped me through the minefield of amalgamation and talked me through my options.
Because of the work of Chris and the team, I am now able to follow my dream and work voluntarily in Romania. My income will not allow me to live like a king there but will allow me to live. With that pressure taken from me, I can devote all my time and energy working to support people in need.
My work is varied – rather than telling individuals and charities there what I can do for them, my approach is to ask what they need. This has led to many things from cleaning out workrooms to make them usable again, driving students to lessons, unblocking toilets, fixing taps, organisation an international conference and writing funding applications for a new €4m centre. The people we help are mainly either children with disabilities or people from the Roma Gypsy community – both sections of society who face massive adversity to achieve even a basic life. The education programmes with the Roma teenagers help lift their self esteem and increase their employability, the house building programmes allow families to move from their insubstantial shelters into brick built houses. I also help manage and recruit volunteers from England and it is great to see my work affecting them as much (if not more) than some of the Romanian people I work with. One quote from a Roma Gypsy was this: “We love it when you come here. You speak, eat and drink with us as equals. When we go to the shops other Romanians look at us with bad eyes”. From a very low level of letting someone know they are valuable as a person to differing levels of feeding, teaching and providing housing – all of this is only possible thanks to the management of my savings and pension fund. I could write pages about the stories I have so far – every day brings a new situation, a new family and a new opportunity to help people reach their buried potential.
